This is weird because I’m a Jason Silva fan and today he retweeted an article from The Guardian about how naturopaths are snake oil salesmen. I was surprised because he’s such a new age kind of guy.
And now I’m reading Wikipedia about the non-existent data on Reiki and meaninglessness of practitioner’s credentials. Lots of skepticism floating around my world today.
I think it’s important to have this information (i.e. lack of emperical data, in the case of Reiki)and keep it at the forefront of your decsion making when pursuing any alternate avenue of healing.
With that in mind, would I go to a Reiki Master for my cancer treatment and forego conventional chemo or radiation? Nah. But if it improved my coping ability or decreased my stress levels or benefitted me in some complementary way, would I keep it in my treatment schedule? — Absolutely.
A placebo effect is still an effect.
Does that sound reasonable?
