I really appreciate this suggestion. So many times I want to approach service members in public and thank them for their service, but then I’m embarrassed that all I have to offer by way of appreciation is an empty platitude along the vein of “thoughts and prayers”. It feels vague at best, and offensive at worst. The greater sin would be to offend, so I court eye contact and smile my most sincere, heartfelt smile, sometimes silently mouth my, “thank you”, and move on wondering what I can do that would help me better understand and, more importantly, help them feel better understood.
