Hells, to the mother-grabbing, yes. I’m a pretty chill, live and let live kind of gal and this phenomenon really gets my britches in a bunch.
On one hand, more power to the people who have managed to extract an algorithm which allows them to amass credit for engaging people without actually engaging anyone at all. On the other hand, the artist in me gets legit grumpy that said “influencers” monopolize space that could be filled with some really talented people and resonating messages. They produce pseudocultural, pseudointellectual, pseudoinfluential bloat and it, frankly, chaps my ass.
That being said, when I sit and close my eyes and really think about it, I wouldn’t trade spots with said “influencers” if I could. I would rather compose gut-wrenching content that literally makes me cry on my keyboard for my 70 beautiful followers (for whom I am beyond grateful) than slap my name on some mass produced, unmitigaged, souless crap in the interest of accumulating “influence”.
Thank you, up and down and left and right, for the mention. I mean…seriously.
From one woman baring her soul to another, I’m glad we’re part of the same tribe.
